An alveoplasty (or removal of jaw bone) is performed for a variety of reasons. The majority of cases are performed in order to accept a removable appliance such as a denture. This process is carried out by separating the gums away from the bone, followed by the necessary removal of bone in order to comfortably accept the denture at a later time once healing is complete. If you have large bony protuberances on the top or bottom jaw, a consultation with Dr. Cohen would be most beneficial in order to ensure comfort and proper fit of your future removable appliance.
